Managed SIM connectivity for security and CCTV

Connect security equipment through a managed mobile plan with a shared monthly data pool. For a camera installation, the router or SIM-enabled camera carries the footage transferred off site. For alarms, gates and safety devices, the communication requirements may also include voice or SMS, which must be confirmed separately.

Shared data and contract options

Seneca’s fleet planner provides indicative pricing for multi-network SIMs sharing a monthly data pool, with PAYG and 24-month options. Check coverage, device compatibility, usage limits and final terms before activation. Onboarding is additional.

SIM cards for CCTV cameras

A SIM in a cellular camera or router lets you view and manage CCTV where a fixed connection is unavailable. Local recording keeps footage on site; remote viewing and cloud uploads consume mobile data. This example assumes local recording with occasional remote viewing; regular live monitoring or frequent incident retrieval transfers substantially more and needs a larger pool.

Data requirements for CCTV cameras

Use the transmitted video bitrate, including audio where enabled. Include every camera sharing the router and separately budget clip uploads, playback and maintenance.

Worked data and cost example

Illustrative usage: 1 SIM, 2 cameras at 2 Mbps, 15 minutes of viewing per camera per day, over 30 days. Add 1 GB per SIM for other traffic and 20% spare capacity. The resulting fleet data budget is 17.4 GB. A 17.5 GB shared pool for this fleet is priced by the fleet planner at £54.31 monthly on PAYG (the 24-month term for this size is priced on application) including VAT.

SIM cards for Intruder alarms

An alarm communicator can send status checks and event notifications using a cellular connection. Some systems use cellular as backup to a fixed connection.

Data requirements for Intruder alarms

Check which SIMs the alarm manufacturer accepts, how its monitoring service connects, and whether the service requires SMS or voice as well as packet data.

Worked data and cost example

Illustrative usage: 1 SIM, each transmitting a 1 KB record every 15 minutes over 30 days. Add 0.005 GB per SIM for other traffic and 20% spare capacity. The resulting fleet data budget is 0.009 GB. A 0.5 GB shared pool for this fleet is priced by the fleet planner at £5.12 monthly on PAYG or £2.70 monthly on a 24-month term including VAT.

SIM cards for Temporary surveillance towers

A surveillance tower can combine cameras, local recording and a mobile router for temporary security coverage. Motion uploads and operator viewing determine the data transferred off site. This example assumes modest motion activity, around twenty short clips per camera a day; a busy site that triggers far more footage needs a larger allowance.

Data requirements for Temporary surveillance towers

Include all video streams, incident retrieval and monitoring sessions. Test the upload connection at the actual deployment location.

Worked data and cost example

Illustrative usage: 1 SIM, 2 cameras at 2 Mbps, 15 minutes of viewing per camera per day, 20 motion clips per camera per day lasting 30 seconds, over 30 days. Add 1 GB per SIM for other traffic and 20% spare capacity. The resulting fleet data budget is 28.2 GB. A 28.5 GB shared pool for this fleet is priced by the fleet planner at £85.30 monthly on PAYG (the 24-month term for this size is priced on application) including VAT.

SIM cards for Access-control gates

Cellular access control connects remote gates and entry equipment for permission updates, event logs and remote management.

Data requirements for Access-control gates

Allow for remote opening requests, status checks and updates. If the gate has a video intercom, estimate its video traffic separately.

Worked data and cost example

Illustrative usage: 1 SIM, each transmitting a 2 KB record every 5 minutes over 30 days. Add 0.005 GB per SIM for other traffic and 20% spare capacity. The resulting fleet data budget is 0.027 GB. A 0.5 GB shared pool for this fleet is priced by the fleet planner at £5.12 monthly on PAYG or £2.70 monthly on a 24-month term including VAT.

SIM cards for Lone-worker safety devices

Lone-worker devices may send location updates and emergency alerts to a monitoring platform. Some also provide two-way voice communication.

Data requirements for Lone-worker safety devices

Confirm device and monitoring-service requirements, indoor coverage, alert delivery, battery behaviour and voice support where required.

Worked data and cost example

Illustrative usage: 1 SIM, each transmitting a 2 KB record every 1 minute over 30 days. Add 0.005 GB per SIM for other traffic and 20% spare capacity. The resulting fleet data budget is 0.11 GB. A 0.5 GB shared pool for this fleet is priced by the fleet planner at £5.12 monthly on PAYG or £2.70 monthly on a 24-month term including VAT.

SIM plan pricing and worked fleet examples

Seneca’s fleet planner uses a shared data pool that resets monthly. The examples below are produced by the same pricing engine as Seneca’s live fleet planner (checked 5 October 2026); they are indicative, not guaranteed tariffs for every configuration.

Example fleet-plan prices from the planner engine · monthly including VAT
SIM countShared monthly poolPAYG24-month term
15 GB£19.10£10.09
1010 GB£75.60£37.80
2020 GB£129.60£75.60
5050 GB£264.60£189.00
100100 GB£432.00£378.00
100300 GB£972.00£675.00

PAYG is displayed as monthly rolling with 30 days’ notice. The 24-month option is a commitment; where the planner shows price on application, request a quote. The planner lists additional usage at £4 per GB including VAT and notes that onboarding is additional.

PAYG examples also show a one-off SIM card charge; the 24-month option shows the SIM card included. The monthly table excludes one-off charges. Verify current pricing, coverage, usage limits and order-form terms in the Seneca fleet planner before activation.

How the data estimate is calculated

Video, reports and monthly application traffic

Video is estimated at 0.45 GB per hour for each 1 Mbps transmitted stream. Reporting traffic uses transmitted KB per record × reports per day × days ÷ 1,000,000 to give decimal GB. Router and media-download scenarios use a monthly GB estimate entered by you. These models assume the selected pattern is consistent during the month.

Spare capacity and real usage

Add maintenance, heartbeats, reconnects and updates as other traffic. Spare capacity increases the recommended data budget. Use transmitted record sizes rather than payload-only sizes where possible, and validate the estimate against a pilot or router usage records. Motion clips are capped at 24 hours per camera per day; remote viewing is counted separately. Continuous cloud mode assumes viewing happens through the cloud and does not create another SIM stream.

Common questions about security & cctv SIM cards

How much data does a CCTV SIM use?

At 1 Mbps, one hour of transmitted video uses about 0.45 GB before overhead. Two cameras at 2 Mbps, each viewed for 15 minutes a day over 30 days, transmit 13.5 GB. Continuous uploading changes the requirement substantially.

Can I use any SIM in an alarm panel?

Compatibility depends on the communicator and monitoring provider. Confirm the supported networks, APN settings and any data, SMS or voice requirements before ordering.

Do surveillance towers need unlimited data?

Not automatically. A tower that records locally and sends selected clips may fit a finite pool. Continuous cloud video can require hundreds of gigabytes per camera each month; estimate that load before choosing a tariff.

Does a gate SIM need voice or SMS?

Some gate controllers use a call or SMS to trigger opening; others use data. A data-only SIM is suitable only when the controller and service support it.

Is mobile coverage enough to validate a lone-worker device?

Coverage is one part of validation. The device, monitoring platform, alert workflow and any voice functions need to work together under the conditions in which the device will be used.

Do these prices include VAT?

The quoted examples and calculator amounts include VAT at 20%, matching the shop’s headline pricing. Confirm tax treatment and final charges on the order form.

What happens if the fleet exceeds its monthly pool?

The planner displays £4 per GB including VAT for additional usage. Confirm billing increments, usage limits and any alerts or controls on the order form. Pooling does not remove the need to monitor total traffic.

Will every device work with this SIM plan?

Confirm the device’s mobile technology, supported bands, SIM format, APN and permitted networks or countries. Voice, SMS, public addressing and inbound remote access require explicit confirmation; they are not assumed by this data estimate.

Plan your security & cctv SIM service

Confirm equipment and operating requirements

Send the camera or communicator models, number of SIMs, installation locations and monitoring-platform details. For CCTV, include whether recording stays on site, the transmitted bitrate and the expected remote-viewing or clip-upload activity.

Choose the data pool and contract term

Use the calculator to estimate combined traffic, including other data and spare capacity. Check current plan prices in Seneca’s fleet planner and compare the term that suits your deployment. The calculator’s annual figure covers 12 months of running cost; it does not represent the total commitment of a 24-month contract.

Confirm activation and one-off costs

Request confirmation of onboarding, SIM card charges, supported coverage and any platform or remote-access requirements. Hardware, installation, monitoring subscriptions and specialist communication functions are not included in the running-cost estimates shown here.
